ClimAurea
Storm Daniel’s floods across Thessaly in 2023 and the heatwaves of 2022 and 2025 weren’t outliers; they were previews. Europe’s agro-climatic zones have already shifted over the past four decades, yet most farmers and advisors are still working from seasonal forecasts, tools that skip livestock and grassland systems entirely, and adaptation know-how that rarely travels beyond the region where it was learned.
ClimAurea closes that gap by fusing Earth Observation, high-resolution climate projections, and AI into one system: suitability maps showing what will grow where through 2100, three stressor-modelling hubs that simulate how drought, flood, and heat actually hit crops and herds, and a Digital Twin farmers can question directly: ask “Will winter wheat still be viable on my land in 2040?” and get an answer grounded in the model, not a guess.
The work plays out across five pilot regions, from the flood-prone Pinios Delta in Thessaly to the semi-arid Montado landscapes of Alentejo, where local farming data shapes adaptation strategies that are tested on the ground, then scaled through agroecological zoning so the results reach far beyond the fields that produced them.
Role of FSH in the Project
- Turning suitability maps, stressor-hub results, and Digital Twin outputs into messaging that farmers, advisors, and CAP policymakers actually use.
- Running ClimAurea’s policy dialogue webinars with CAP implementers and the EU Adaptation Mission network.Building the Exploitation and Sustainability Plan that keeps the Digital Twin and AI advisor running once the funding ends.
- Coordinating IP management across the 13-partner consortium, from background knowledge to the tools ClimAurea creates.
ClimAurea by numbers
- 13 partner organizations across 9 European countries
- 5 pilot regions: West Flanders (Belgium), Alentejo (Portugal), Thessaly (Greece), Țara Călatei (Romania)
- 1 Digital Twin platform + ClimAurea Advisor, a multilingual AI advisory interface
- Suitability and risk projected across 9 of 11 EU biogeographical regions
- At least 12 co-designed adaptation strategies tested with local farmers and advisors
- 3 thematic stressor-modelling hubs: drought, flood, and heatwave
- 5 major crops and 3 livestock systems mapped for future suitability
