AIR2FOOD

Current European food production is resource-intensive, vulnerable to climate shocks, and heavily reliant on agricultural imports, posing a significant challenge to long-term food security and environmental health. While gas precision fermentation, using engineered microorganisms to turn CO₂ into nutrients, offers a breakthrough alternative independent of farmland, the sector remains in its infancy. These innovations are hindered by a fragmented ecosystem, where start-ups face immense barriers in scaling up due to limited access to shared pilot infrastructure, immature business models, and complex regulatory uncertainties.

AIR2FOOD addresses this pressing issue by establishing Europe’s first integrated Innovation Hub for gas-based precision fermentation. By leveraging cutting-edge microbial engineering, an AI-powered expert database, and semi-automated techno-economic and life-cycle assessments (TEA/LCA), AIR2FOOD aims to mitigate scaling risks and accelerate three representative demonstrators to TRL 6. Through the development of tailored Green Social Business Models and clear regulatory roadmaps, the project will lower entry barriers and enhance Europe’s competitive edge in sustainable, climate-positive food production.

Role of FSH in the Project

As the leader of Work Package 3: Business Models, Regulation and Sector Roadmaps, Future Systems Hub is helping to bridge the gap between technical breakthroughs and commercialisation. Future Systems Hub is:

  • Developing Green Social Business Models (GSBMs): Creating tailored business strategies for the project’s real-world demonstrators that deeply integrate environmental and societal value alongside traditional economic viability.
  • Driving Go-to-Market Planning: Formulating custom, long-term economic sustainability strategies and market-entry roadmaps to help scale gas precision fermentation technologies successfully into the market.
  • Building Investment Foundations: Developing dedicated investment pathways for innovators and early-stage companies to secure follow-up investment and helping to foster strategic alliances between the consortium and other EU networks or companies.

Role of FSH

  • Leads the development and implementation of the enhanced digital platform for food surplus and food waste management.
  • Maps relevant stakeholders and assesses their needs in Šabac and Otok.
  • Develops digital features for surplus prediction, automated matching, logistics coordination and renewable energy recovery.
  • Coordinates platform testing with farmers, food businesses, distributors, humanitarian organisations and other end users.
  • Provides training materials, workshops, online tutorials and user guides to support platform adoption.
  • Contributes to the development of the joint food waste-to-energy model and the promotion and replication of project results.
